Inlays & Onlays

Strengthen and Restore Damaged Teeth with Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays dental restorations are used to deal with damage on the biting surface of an affected tooth. These treatments are used to help bring back the strength and normal function to decayed or damaged teeth, so you can go back to effortlessly eating and chewing your favourite food items once more.

Inlays effectively repair the damage to a tooth’s biting surface, while onlays are used when more than one of the tooth’s biting cusps is affected. These indirect teeth restorations are used in cases when fillings are not enough to fill out the cavity (but the tooth structure is not enough to support a crown), and also to prevent the decay from spreading.

When Would I Need Inlays & Onlays?

If the biting surface of your tooth (or teeth) is damaged due to tooth decay or other dental problems, you will benefit from inlays and onlays. These teeth restorations can also prevent minimal damage from worsening, so you do not have to deal with bigger cavities.

What’s Involved in Inlays & Onlays?

The Ins and Outs of Inlays & Onlays at Wanstead Dental

  • Decayed or damaged tooth parts will be removed before the inlays and onlays are indirectly placed.
  • An impression of the affected tooth will be taken to guide us in making the inlay and onlay material corresponding precisely to the tooth.
  • The impression will be sent to a laboratory, where the customised inlay or onlay will be created. A temporary restoration will be placed on your tooth while waiting for the permanent restoration to be finished.
  • The permanent inlay or onlay will be placed on your tooth on your next visit, giving you back the strength and normal function of your once-damaged tooth.

Am I Suitable for Inlays and Onlays?

If you have damage or decay on the biting surface of your tooth, you will benefit from an inlays and onlays treatment. These teeth restorations successfully bring back the normal form and function of the damaged tooth. We will discuss your suitability for these treatments at Wanstead Dental to come up with a treatment plan that will best answer your needs.

What Can Inlays & Onlays Do for Me?

  • Inlays and onlays are created to match the appearance of your teeth, so you can be confident that the restorations will not look obvious even when you open your mouth, or when you smile.
  • Less tooth structure will need to be removed with an inlay or onlay treatment; the healthy parts will be preserved and left untouched.
  • Inlays and onlays can bring back the strength of your damaged tooth. After the treatment, you can once again use that tooth to bite or chew on your favourite food items, without the pain that comes with a cavity or tooth decay.
  • You can look forward to the use of your treated tooth (or teeth) for a very long time, as inlays and onlays are guaranteed to be long-lasting.
